Same Sex Marriages in Mexico City

It had looked like Mexico City was poised to become the next hot spot for gay travel when Mexico City's legislature approved gay marriage on December 21, in the first such law passed anywhere in Latin America.

Now Mexico's attorney general has lodged an appeal at the country's top court against Mexico City's approval of gay marriage which had started a heated debate in this overwhelmingly Catholic nation.

The attorney general's office said in its appeal to the Supreme Court late Wednesday that the move was "anti-constitutional," as was adoption by homosexual couples, which was also approved by Mexico City's liberal authorities.

Mexico City Mayor Marcelo Ebrard on Thursday called the appeal a "grave mistake."

It was not the job of the federal attorney general, Arturo Chavez, to decide the capital's laws, Ebrard said.

The initiator of the law, leftist deputy David Razu, said the move went against rights and freedoms, and was without legal basis.

Powerful religious groups and conservatives, including President Felipe Calderon's National Action Party, have strongly opposed gay marriages.

The Mexican capital authorized civil unions for homosexuals in November 2006 and decriminalized abortion in April 2007, in contrast with mostly conservative policies across the rest of the largely Catholic nation.

Cuba Multi Destination Flights Announced

Four Canadian charter airlines will be granted permission from the Government of Cuba to fly between multiple domestic locations within Cuba.

Canada provides Cuba with over 40 percent of its overall tourists. 2009 saw a record number of Canadians tourists in Cuba with over 900,000 visitors.

While the US government embargo still forbids ordinary US citizens from visiting Cuba, Canadians have made Cuba a favorite Caribbean destination attracted by Cuba’s many beach resorts along Varanasi, plus cultural offerings in Cuba's capital city, Havana.

Under the new agreement, four Canadian charter airlines will be permitted to fly between multiple locations after landing in Cuba. That means winter sun seekers to Cuba would be able to fly on Canadian air carriers to more than one destination within the country, presumably on a single vacation.

Cuba’s ambassador to Canada, De JesDus Vicente Sotolongo, told The Press that the measure would apply to four Canadian charter airlines that currently run tours to Cuba: Air Transat, Sunwing Airlines, WestJet and Canjet Airlines.
