![]() ![]() World Travel Guide reviews the best mens walking shoes for travelClarks Shoes - Review of Clark Shoes for MenReview by Wade RowlandI don’t know about you, but I get attached to shoes I’ve worn on memorable trips. I still have the sturdy split-leather hiking boots a bought for my first trip to Europe many years ago, in fact I took them along on a subsequent trip to central Africa. They’re still comfortable and perfectly serviceable.
This year when we were planning a trip to Greece the hiking boots seemed a bit more robust than what I’d need for touring the archaeological sites like Delphi, Mycenae and Knossos. While climbs to hillside and mountaintop sites can often be strenuous, Greece has done a great deal in recent decades to improve access to its many magnificent archaeological sites, much of the work being done with the help of European Union funding. The result is that a good pair of walking shoes is all you’re ever likely to need. That, and a pair of sturdy sandals for exploring city streets and village lanes, which are often cobbled or paved unevenly with stone. I find that Europeans in general tend to dress more formally (read: better) than many North Americans, and I like to feel presentable when I’m in restaurants, churches and public places, so my walking shoes need to be able to pass muster in these situations as well. Which means, at minimum, they need to be unobtrusive when worn with a pair of dressier cotton or linen slacks.
With these considerations in mind I found that the Clark’s shoes and sandals I took with me were hard to beat. Both have sturdy platforms for the feet and durable, grippy soles. Both are made of oiled leather, a fact I appreciated when we were more than once caught in torrential downpours in villages where streets and alleys double as storm sewers. Left to dry overnight, they were as good as new in the morning. The sandals enclose the toes and so are quite presentable in all but the most formal of circumstances, and the shoes are, in my view, quite attractive. (I removed the fabric finger loops from mine—a matter of personal taste.) Perhaps the best thing about them is that they need virtually no break-in time, thanks to careful design and choice of construction materials. These shoes and sandals never bite or chafe, from day one. Clarks Shoes models reviewed were: Portland shoes Model 31936 in Brown Leather and the Charles Sandal Model 70982 in Brown Oily Leather.
