The guestrooms at Hotel Certosa di Maggiano in Siena have authentic Italian villa charm, complemented by such welcome little luxuries as fine linen sheets, quality toiletries, plush robes and bedroom slippers, and showers made for sharing. The 17 rooms, corresponding to what were seventeen monastic cells, are situated on three floors.

The hotel grounds are vast and among the olive groves and vineyards one finds a tennis court, helicopter landing, and a heated, open-air pool. Near the pool there is also a small fitness room.

Open the shutters in your room and you're looking out over the legendary Tuscan landscape, with its sentinel cypress trees, olive groves and vineyards.

The Certosa di Maggiano kitchen is one of the best in this part of Italy, headed up by Chef Vincenzo di Grande, clearly a rising star. His cuisine is solidly rooted in regional tradition and technically impeccable, but surprising and inventive. Much of what he serves comes straight from the estate's own gardens and the rest is fresh from surrounding farms.

The ricotta, a staple, is light as a soufflé and so fresh it smells of new-mown grass. The local pecorino, served in vintages of one week, two months and six months, is as good as it gets. Fresh tagliolini with garden peas and a diaphanous sauce is a feast fit for angels. The house wine, which comes from just up the road as is served by the pitcher, is superb. Each meal is an event.
